Panchvi Paas: A Curtain Raiser

Panchvi Paas: A Curtain Raiser

SRK begins his second season of hosting with the quiz show Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain? The phone lines have been opened while the actual shooting begins on April 4. The show is expected to start by the end of April.

A source from the channel informs us, “According to the schedule, we will begin shooting on April 4 and right now there is no change in it. The first promos of questions go on air from March 4. The shooting will take place in the same studio, Film City, where KBC 3 was shot.”

Adds the source, “There will be a panel of 5 kids, which will be chosen through auditions. The kids have to download and fill up forms for the same. The procedure will end by this month.”

Format of the show

The contestants have to answers questions from Maths, Social Studies, General Science and Language. The questions will be in the range of 1st to 5th standard. The contestant will be offered a card of 10 subjects from which they have to select subjects as per their convenience. Every correct answer will help contestants earn prize money.

Further, the contestants can use three ‘cheat’ facilities provided to them. These cheats involve a group of children who will be the contestants’ classmates and can answers the questions. Every two correct answers will add one more kid in that group.

The three cheats are Copy, Peek and Save. In Copy, the contestant can copy the current teammate’s answer to the question. Peek means the contestant can review his teammate’s answer before submitting his. Save cheat is triggered automatically if the person gives a wrong answer and his partner has given correct answer. The contestant is then saved.

Finally, if the contestant decides to quit the show even after using his cheats he/she will have to say, “I am not smarter than a 5th grader.”

Synergy Adlabs and Bulldog Media are producing the show in India. The concept has been implemented successfully in 50 countries across the world.

Kya aapko Paanchvi Paas malum hai?

Here’s everything you need and ought to know about the quiz show.

'Kya Aap Panchvi Pass Se Tez Hai' is based on the international Mark Burnett format 'Are you smarter than a Fifth Grader', where grade school level questions are put to adults from all walks of life. The format is a rave in 50 countries worwide currently.

'Kya Aap Panchvi Pass Se Tez Hai' will witness Shahrukh Khan act as a teacher of class five where adult contestants will be asked ten questions from grade level one to five, the right answers to which would entitle them to a mammoth prize money of Rs 5 crore. From the look of it, Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain is an intelligent show in terms of content and the actor host.

So how will this be different from Big B’s or King Khan’s version of, let’s say, KBC for that matter?

The first is that this has the biggest prize money — Rs 5 crore — which has ever been offered on Indian television. Secondly, the contestants will be judged on the basis of their knowledge from a fifth class student’s textbooks. Most of us feel more enlightened than fifth class students and dismiss what their books have to offer. If the contestant wants to quit the game at any stage, he or she will have to confess, main paanchvi pass se tez nahin hoon. This show is also an attempt to bring the family together before the TV around dinner time and is already being touted as the most exciting and ambitious TV show in India.

The Rules of the Game

Each game is played by an individual contestant, who is presented with the chance to win up to Rupees 5 Crore by answering questions taken from the syllabus of a fifth grade level or lower. The contestant is presented with 10 subject cards, which he may answer in the order of his choice. Each correct answer moves the contestant higher up the ladder of money values. If a contestant answers all 10 questions correctly, he is given the chance to answer an 11th question which on answering correctly will get him Rupees 5 Crore. Each time a question is answered, the contestant must ‘confirm’ the answer by saying it out loud. As each new question is read, the contestant is given the option to drop out with the amount of money currently in his bank. If the contestant chooses to answer the question, but gives the wrong answer, he walks away with nothing (during questions 1-5) or with Rs. 200000 (question 6 or later).

The above mechanism varies on the 11th question, if the contestant should reach it. The 11th question is drawn from a separate pool of five fifth-grade questions. However, unlike previous questions, the contestant must commit to answering or walking away, based on subject alone—he will not be allowed to hear the question before making his decision.

Cheats

The contestant is also provided three cheats to use over the course of the round. All of these cheats involve his classmates, which is a group of children seated on stage who are answering the same questions as the contestant. Every two questions, a new classmate joins the contestant and becomes his teammate for those two questions. The contestant can use his cheats at any time during the first 10 questions.

Three lifelines

Taank Jhaank: Here, the contestant has the opportunity to review his current teammate’s answer before submitting his own.
Nakal: Here, the contestant may opt not to answer the question at all, but rather, let his current teammate answer for him. Unlike the ‘copy your classmate’ cheat, in this instance, the contestant may not reject his teammate’s answer, but is stuck with it.
Bachao: This cheat is triggered automatically if the contestant gives a wrong answer. If the contestant’s current partner turns out to have the correct answer, the contestant is then saved. The only instance in which two cheats can be used on the same question is if the contestant opts for Taank Jhaank, rejects the kid’s correct answer, gives a wrong answer himself, and is then saved by the kid. Other than this one scenario, the cheats must necessarily be used individually.

The twist in the game

If the contestant makes it to the 11th and final question, he must tackle that question without help, even if he has not used his cheats.
Upon leaving the game either by quitting, or answering incorrectly, the contestant must profess to the camera, “I’m not smarter than a fifth grader.” While the kids will have fun watching the elders admitting that they are not smarter than a fifth grader; elders will be put to a lot of embarrassment.

A Money-Spinning Show

Slated to be aired on Star Plus from April 18, the quiz show is already magnetising advertisers. The brands in the queue as associate sponsors, who will spend upto Rs 10 crore, include PepsiCo India, LG Electronics,General Motors and Cadbury. Indian telecom giant Airtel has offered about Rs 40 crore as pesenting sponsor for the quiz show. The 36 episode show will have around 700 to 800 seconds of commercial time per episode. Around 10-15 per cent of the 700-800 seconds will be sold as spot buys.
Besides, the Star Plus is also expecting revenue of over Rs 18 crore from mobile and landline calls and through SMSes for the show. The Call rates will be around Rs 4 per landline call and Rs 6 for mobiles. The amount is higher than the Rs 10-12 crore which the channel earned during Kaun Banega Karorepati (KBC) last year.

SRK ‘Riding’ on his IPL dream

SRK ‘Riding’ on his IPL dream

Shah Rukh Khan seems to be taking his newly acquired role as the franchisee of IPL’s Kolkata Knight Riders so seriously that his first love acting has taken a backseat for the moment. SRK has postponed the shooting of Dulha Mil Gaya tentatively to June.
He will begin shooting for Yash Raj’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi in May and before that he will only be shooting for Paanchvi Paas.

A source close to SRK told us, “Yes SRK is focussing totally on his IPL venture right now so he taking a short break from films. He will be personally present at all the matches of Knight Riders. Only after the tournament gets over will he begin concentrating totally on films again.”

The King Khan is presently trying his best to make sure that the banned Shoaib Akhtar gets a chance to play in IPL. “Shah Rukh believes that Shoaib is one of the trump cards of the team and hence is going out of his way to try and see if Shoaib can somehow be part of the team,” adds the source.

“SRK is also heavily involved in the strategizing of the team. He, along with Sourav Ganguly, Chris Gayle and the others will combine to try and keep the team ahead of the others. Shah Rukh has even said that if the time comes, he will also bowl for the team! What’s more, the King Khan will act as the team’s 12h man and carry drinks on the field. He will also perform at the interval between the matches, “the source further reveals.

“Shah Rukh seems to have really taken to the 20:20 format of the game. He was even present in SA to cheer on the Indian team at the World Cup finals against Pakistan which we won so no surprise that he is taking so much interest in the IPL. Sometime back the BCCI had pulled up SRK saying he was promoting his films at cricket matches but that is a thing of the past now,” concludes the source.

Well, Chak De India really seems to have inspired SRK. The big difference being that instead of the hockey stick he is wielding the willow.

About The Show

Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hai? is a studio-based game show in which succeeding contestants compete for a large sum of money by attempting to answer questions taken from primary school class materials. The format outlined below is how the show works.

Game Play Each round is played by an individual contestant, who is presented with the chance to win up to Rs 5 crores by answering 11 questions taken from class materials (e.g. textbooks or workbooks) of first to fifth class.

The contestant is presented with 10 subject cards, which he may answer in the order of his choice. Each correct answer moves the contestant higher up the ladder of rupee value. If a contestant answers all 10 questions correctly, he is given a chance to answer an 11th question for Rs 5 crores.

Each time a question is answered, the contestant must "lock in" the answer by saying it out loud and pressing a buzzer.

As each new question is read, the contestant is given the option to drop out with the amount of money currently in his bank. If the contestant chooses to answer the question, but gives the wrong answer, he walks away with nothing (during questions 1-5) or with Rs. 2, 00,000 (value of question 5).

The above mechanism varies on the 11th question, if the contestant should reach it. The 11th question is drawn from a separate pool of class five questions. Unlike previous questions, the contestant must commit to answering or walking away based on the subject alone. He or she will not be allowed to hear the question before making this decision.

The contestant also has three lifelines called cheats to use over the course of a round. All these cheats involve his classmates, which is a group of children seated on stage who are answering the same questions as the contestant. Every two questions, a new classmate joins the contestant and becomes his teammate for those two questions. The contestant can use his cheats at any time during the first 10 questions.

Cheats The first cheat is called Taak Jhaak, which means that the contestant has the opportunity to review his current teammate's answer before submitting his own.

The second cheat is Copy, in which the contestant may opt not to answer the question at all, but rather, let his current teammate answer for him. Unlike the "copy your classmate" cheat, in this instance, the contestant cannot reject his teammate's answer, but is stuck with it.

The final cheat is Bachao. This cheat is triggered automatically if the contestant gives a wrong answer. If the contestant's current partner turns out to have the correct answer, the contestant is then saved.

The only instance in which two cheats can be used on the same question is if the contestant chooses Taak Jhaak, rejects the kid's correct answer, gives a wrong answer himself, and is then saved by the kid. Other than this one scenario, the cheats must necessarily be used individually.

Once all three cheats have been used, the kids will stay in the "class" and no longer join the contestant at the podium.

If the contestant makes it to the 11th and final question, he must tackle that question without help, even if he has not used his cheats.

International Performance The format was originally created in the U.S and has been adapted in several countries worldwide.
